Beschreibung

A seminal 1514 engraving by Albrecht Dürer, depicting a winged figure in a state of intellectual paralysis amidst a collection of symbolic objects.

Albrecht Dürer's 1514 engraving, Melencolia I, is one of the most analysed works in the history of Western printmaking. It depicts a winged personification of Melancholy, seated in a state of deep contemplation. She holds a compass in one hand, while her other hand supports her head. Her expression is one of frustration or paralysis, suggesting the inability of the creative mind to realise its visions despite possessing the necessary tools.

The composition is crowded with symbolic objects. A large, irregular polyhedron dominates the left side, accompanied by a sphere and various carpentry tools, including a saw, a plane, and nails. A small putto sits upon a millstone, scribbling on a tablet. Above them, an hourglass, a bell, and a magic square are mounted on the wall. In the background, a comet streaks across the sky, illuminating a distant sea and landscape. These elements reflect the Renaissance fascination with geometry, alchemy, and the temperaments of the human psyche.

Dürer employed a sophisticated range of hatching and cross-hatching techniques to create texture and depth. The metallic sheen of the polyhedron and the soft folds of the figure's drapery demonstrate his technical mastery of the copper plate. The work is often grouped with his other master engravings, Saint Jerome in His Study and Knight, Death and the Devil, as part of a trio of works that explore different aspects of the human condition. The inclusion of the magic square, where each row, column, and diagonal adds up to thirty-four, further demonstrates the mathematical rigour applied to this enigmatic scene. It remains a primary example of the intellectual depth characteristic of the Northern Renaissance.

Artist Biography

Albrecht Durer

Dürer brought the Italian Renaissance to northern Europe and took northern European printmaking to Italy. He went both ways. He visited Venice twice (1494-95 and 1505-07) and absorbed the colour, light, and anatomical precision of Bellini and Mantegna. He brought back a confidence in the human figure that German art had not previously possessed. In return, he showed the Venetians what could be done with a woodcut and an engraving burin.

He was born in Nuremberg, the son of a Hungarian goldsmith. He trained as a goldsmith himself before apprenticing with the painter and printmaker Michael Wolgemut. The metalwork training gave him the manual precision that made his prints extraordinary. Melencolia I, Knight, Death and the Devil, and Saint Jerome in His Study, all made between 1513 and 1514, are among the finest engravings ever produced. The density of cross-hatching, the control of tonal gradation, the rendering of fur, feathers, and stone: these are virtuoso performances in a medium that most artists treated as reproductive.

He drew a rhinoceros from a description and a sketch sent by letter. He had never seen one. Dürer's Rhinoceros (1515) is anatomically wrong in several respects (the animal has an extra horn and armour plating) but it remained the standard European image of a rhinoceros for three centuries.

He was one of the first artists to paint self-portraits as a primary subject. The Self-Portrait at Twenty-Eight (1500) shows him facing the viewer directly, with long hair and a fur coat, in a pose traditionally reserved for Christ. It was either an act of supreme confidence or deliberate blasphemy. Probably both.
