This ink wash painting by the 13th-century artist Zhiweng depicts a historical encounter between the Chan master Yaoshan Weiyan and the Confucian official Li Ao. The work belongs to the tradition of Chan Buddhist figure painting, which prioritises economy of line and the capture of spiritual presence over realistic anatomical detail.
Zhiweng employs a minimalist approach, using thin, fluid brushstrokes to outline the seated figure of Yaoshan. The master is shown in a moment of quiet instruction, his posture relaxed yet attentive. The surrounding environment is suggested through subtle washes of ink, creating a sense of space without the need for rigid architectural or naturalistic boundaries. The paper surface, aged to a warm, neutral tone, acts as an integral part of the composition, providing a quiet background that allows the ink forms to emerge with clarity.
In this depiction, the interaction between the two figures is conveyed through gesture and gaze. The artist avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the psychological weight of the dialogue.
