A classic example of Yuan Dynasty ink wash painting by the monk-painter Yintuoluo, depicting a narrative scene from the Chan Buddhist tradition.
This work, attributed to the Yuan Dynasty monk-painter Yintuoluo, exemplifies the Chan Buddhist tradition of ink wash painting. The composition features a narrative scene involving the Fifth Patriarch, rendered with the economy of line characteristic of the period. Yintuoluo, a figure active during the mid-14th century, utilised a style that prioritises spiritual spontaneity over rigid technical precision. The figures are depicted with fluid, calligraphic brushwork, set against a sparse background that encourages contemplation.
The scene captures a moment of transmission or encounter, a common theme in Chan iconography. The artist employs varying ink tones to define the forms of the figures and the surrounding natural elements, such as the gnarled tree trunk on the left. The inclusion of calligraphic inscriptions on the right side of the composition balances the visual weight of the figures, integrating text and image in a manner typical of Chinese literati art. The original work is mounted as a hanging scroll, a format that dictates the vertical orientation and the viewing experience of the piece.
Technically, the painting relies on the 'xieyi' or 'sketching the idea' approach, where the artist captures the essence of the subject rather than its external appearance. The brushstrokes are deliberate and rhythmic, reflecting the meditative practice associated with the artist's monastic life. The muted palette, dominated by shades of ink and the natural tone of the aged paper, creates a sense of quietude. This print reproduces the subtle gradations of the original ink wash, preserving the texture of the paper and the character of the brushwork. It offers an opportunity to observe the stylistic developments of the late Yuan period, where the influence of Chan philosophy shaped the aesthetic choices of painters who sought to express enlightenment through the medium of ink.
