Beschreibung
A 1893 portrait by Henri Rousseau depicting a French artillery officer, rendered in the artist's signature Naïve style.
Henri Rousseau, a self-taught painter who spent much of his career as a toll collector in Paris, produced this portrait of a military officer in 1893. The subject, Frumence Biche, is depicted in the uniform of the 35th Artillery regiment. Rousseau approaches the figure with a distinct lack of academic perspective, a hallmark of his style. The officer stands centrally, his form rendered with a flat, graphic clarity that ignores traditional anatomical modelling.
The background consists of a simplified, atmospheric sky and a low horizon line, which creates a sense of isolation around the figure. Rousseau pays meticulous attention to the details of the uniform, from the brass buttons to the red piping on the trousers and cuffs. His approach to the face is equally direct, with simplified features and a fixed gaze that engages the viewer. The sword held at the subject's side is painted with a similar focus on linear definition rather than realistic depth.
This work demonstrates the artist's characteristic approach to portraiture, where the subject is presented with a sense of quiet dignity. Rousseau often painted members of the French military and middle class, applying his unique vision to these conventional subjects. By eschewing the techniques taught in formal art academies, he created images that possess a singular, dreamlike quality. The composition is balanced and orderly, reflecting the artist's interest in clarity and structure. This print captures the specific textures of the original oil painting, including the subtle variations in the sky and the sharp outlines of the military attire. It is a representative example of Rousseau's contribution to the development of modern art, showing how his unconventional methods allowed for a fresh interpretation of traditional portraiture.

Marshal des Logis Frumence Biche of the 35th Artillery - Henri Rousseau
Artist Biography
Henri Rousseau
Nicknamed Le Douanier (“the Customs Officer”) due to his job on the outskirts of Paris, Rousseau only began painting seriously at age 40 and retired nine years later to pursue art full time. Though he never left France, his exotic landscapes—lush with oversized foliage and wild animals—were inspired by visits to botanical gardens, illustrated books, and stories from soldiers who had served abroad.
Rousseau believed himself to be a great realist, proudly comparing himself to Picasso. He also pioneered the "portrait landscape" genre, blending figures into rich natural backdrops. Once mocked, Rousseau is now celebrated as a visionary outsider whose work continues to inspire, including references in modern pop culture such as the film Madagascar.
