A striking portrait of a mandrill by Henri Rousseau, featuring his signature stylised foliage and direct, graphic approach to animal subjects.
Henri Rousseau, a self-taught customs officer, produced a series of works depicting exotic flora and fauna that captured the imagination of the Parisian avant-garde. This particular study focuses on the head of a mandrill, framed by the dense, stylised foliage that characterises his jungle compositions. Rousseau never travelled outside of France, instead drawing inspiration from botanical gardens, taxidermy, and illustrated books available in the city.
The mandrill is rendered with a directness that avoids academic polish. The creature's facial features, particularly the bright red nose and blue-ridged cheeks, are painted with a flat, graphic clarity. The surrounding leaves are arranged in a rhythmic, almost decorative manner, creating a sense of enclosure rather than depth. This approach to space is typical of Rousseau, who prioritised the clarity of individual forms over the traditional rules of perspective.
His technique involves layering paint to build up the texture of the fur and the sharp edges of the tropical plants. The signature of the artist is visible in the lower left, executed in his characteristic script. By removing the animal from a wider narrative context, Rousseau forces the viewer to confront the subject directly. The work reflects his unique vision, which sits outside the mainstream movements of his time, such as Impressionism or Fauvism. His ability to create a dreamlike, static atmosphere remains his most recognisable contribution to modern art. This print captures the specific colour palette and the precise, deliberate brushwork of the original oil painting, offering a clear view into the imaginative world of a painter who found his inspiration within the confines of urban life.
