A woodblock print by Toyohara Chikanobu from 1888, depicting a courtesan in a moment of rest, rendered with the clean lines and flat colour planes of the Meiji-era Ukiyo-e style.
This woodblock print by Toyohara Chikanobu, dated 1888, captures a quiet moment of repose. The subject is a courtesan, depicted in a state of rest, her posture relaxed as she leans on one arm. Her expression is soft, suggesting the transition between wakefulness and sleep. The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned against a screen decorated with botanical motifs, which provides a sense of interior space without overwhelming the subject.
Chikanobu was a prolific artist during the Meiji period, a time when Japanese art began to incorporate new techniques while maintaining traditional aesthetics. The print demonstrates the characteristic flat planes of colour and clean, defined outlines associated with the Ukiyo-e tradition. The courtesan wears a patterned kimono, rendered with precision, which contrasts with the solid, bold red of the bedding beneath her. The use of colour is deliberate, creating a visual harmony that draws the eye to the figure while allowing the surrounding elements to provide context.
In this work, the artist focuses on the human form and the subtle details of daily life. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy on the screen adds a layer of narrative, typical of prints from this era that often combined text and image to convey specific themes or seasonal associations. The print is a representative example of the bijin-ga genre, which translates to pictures of beautiful women. Chikanobu’s work here avoids excessive ornamentation, opting instead for a clear, readable composition that emphasises the grace of the subject. The print serves as a record of the fashion and domestic settings of the late nineteenth century in Japan, offering a glimpse into the private sphere of the Yoshiwara district.
