Beschreibung
A woodblock print from the series 'Thirty-two Aspects of Customs and Manners' by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, depicting a weary courtesan in the Meiji era.
This woodblock print is part of the series 'Thirty-two Aspects of Customs and Manners' (Fuzoku sanjuniso), produced by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi in 1888. The series captures the shifting social atmosphere of the Meiji period, documenting the appearance and habits of women across various social strata. In this specific work, Yoshitoshi depicts a courtesan in a moment of repose. Her posture, with one arm supporting her head and the other resting across her chest, conveys a sense of weariness or boredom.
The composition employs the flat aesthetic characteristic of late Ukiyo-e, yet it incorporates a psychological depth that distinguishes Yoshitoshi from his predecessors. The courtesan wears a kimono featuring a bold, repetitive floral pattern, which contrasts with the muted, neutral background. A screen behind her is decorated with subtle botanical motifs, providing a sense of interior space without resorting to Western-style perspective. The artist uses a refined line quality to define the contours of her face and the elaborate arrangement of her hair, which is styled in the traditional manner of the era.
Yoshitoshi was a master of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, often noted for his ability to blend traditional Japanese techniques with a modern sensibility. His work frequently explored the internal lives of his subjects, moving away from the idealised, mask-like faces common in earlier prints. This print serves as a record of the aesthetic and social conditions of the late nineteenth century, capturing the quiet, private moments of a woman whose public life was defined by performance and artifice. The colour palette is balanced, utilising deep reds and soft purples to draw the eye to the figure while maintaining a sense of harmony across the frame.
