The Letter about a Stomachache, or Du tong tie, is a primary example of the wild cursive script, or kuangcao, associated with the Tang Dynasty calligrapher Zhang Xu. This work displays a departure from the regulated, balanced structures of earlier calligraphic traditions. Instead, the brushwork exhibits a rapid, fluid motion that prioritises the expression of the artist's internal state over strict legibility.
Zhang Xu is often grouped with Huaisu as a master of this unrestrained style. The characters in this piece appear to flow into one another, with varying pressure and speed creating a sense of kinetic energy.
