A fine example of Tang Dynasty regular script calligraphy by Zhong Shaojing, featuring precise ink characters on aged paper.
This work is a fine example of Tang Dynasty calligraphy, attributed to the scholar and official Zhong Shaojing. The text, known as the Classic of Spiritual Flight, is written in the regular script style, or Kaishu, which reached a high level of refinement during this period. The characters demonstrate a balance between structural rigour and fluid movement, reflecting the disciplined training required of high-ranking officials in the imperial court.
The ink remains clear against the aged paper, showing the precise control of the brush. Each stroke is deliberate, maintaining a consistent weight that guides the eye vertically through the columns. The composition is orderly, adhering to the traditional grid-like structure common in classical Chinese manuscripts. A small red seal mark is visible near the bottom, providing a subtle contrast to the monochrome ink and the warm, neutral tone of the paper.
Zhong Shaojing was active during the reign of Emperor Ruizong and is remembered for his mastery of the brush. His work is often associated with the preservation of Daoist texts and imperial records. This piece provides a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the early 8th century, where clarity and precision were prized in both administrative and religious documentation. The absence of excessive flourish allows the form of the characters to communicate the gravity of the subject matter.
