A 1775 Neoclassical ink and wash drawing by Jean Démosthène Dugourc, featuring mythological figures surrounding a central title cartouche.
This work by Jean Démosthène Dugourc, dated 1775, functions as a title page or frontispiece for a series of six compositions titled Le Triomphe de Bacchus, et de l'Amour. Dugourc, a designer and draughtsman active in the late eighteenth century, was known for his contributions to interior decoration and ornamental design. This drawing displays his command of the Neoclassical aesthetic, which was gaining traction in France during this period.
The composition features a large, central drapery that serves as a canvas for the title and descriptive text. The lettering is integrated into the scene, framed by a pastoral environment populated with figures associated with Bacchic mythology. Satyrs and other mythological beings are positioned around the edges of the cloth, interacting with the trees and the terrain. The drawing style is precise, utilising fine ink lines and subtle wash to create depth and volume within the figures and the surrounding foliage.
Dugourc often worked on projects that bridged the gap between fine art and decorative arts. His ability to combine narrative elements with ornamental framing is evident here. The scene captures the spirit of the Bacchanale, a common theme in eighteenth-century art that allowed for the exploration of movement and classical motifs. The work provides insight into the graphic design sensibilities of the era, where text and image were treated as a unified visual experience. The use of a sepia-toned wash gives the piece a warm, aged quality, typical of preparatory drawings from the period. This print offers a glimpse into the creative process of a designer who influenced the visual culture of the Ancien Régime and the subsequent Napoleonic era.
