A detailed 1779 etching by Simon Fokke depicting the naval encounter between British and Dutch fleets during the American War of Independence.
This etching by Simon Fokke depicts the naval encounter between the British squadron under Commodore Charles Fielding and the Dutch convoy led by Rear-Admiral Lodewijk van Bylandt in 1779. The event occurred during the American War of Independence, a period of heightened tension regarding neutral shipping rights. Fokke, a prolific Dutch engraver and draughtsman, captures the moment of confrontation with technical precision.
The composition focuses on the exchange of fire between the two fleets. Thick clouds of cannon smoke billow across the water, obscuring parts of the hulls and rigging. The artist employs fine, parallel hatching to render the texture of the sea and the atmospheric conditions of the sky. The ships are positioned to suggest the scale of the engagement, with the Dutch vessels on the right and the British squadron approaching from the left. A small boat carrying figures occupies the centre foreground, providing a sense of scale against the larger warships.
Fokke was well-regarded for his ability to document contemporary events through printmaking. His work often appeared in historical chronicles and publications of the era. This print demonstrates his command of line and shadow, particularly in the depiction of the billowing smoke and the intricate rigging of the eighteenth-century warships. The scene is framed by a simple border, characteristic of the period's illustrative style. It offers a clear visual record of a specific diplomatic and military incident that contributed to the eventual Dutch involvement in the conflict against Britain. The print remains a valuable source for those interested in maritime history and the development of naval warfare imagery in the late eighteenth century.
