A refined woodblock print by Chōkōsai Eishō featuring a large-head portrait of the Oiran Hanaogi, showcasing the elegant aesthetic of the late Edo period.
This woodblock print by Chōkōsai Eishō depicts the Oiran Hanaogi, a high-ranking courtesan of the Ogiya house in the Yoshiwara district of Edo. Eishō was a student of Hosoda Eishi and became known for his refined portraits of women, often focusing on the tall, slender aesthetic popularised in the late 18th century. This work belongs to the 'okubi-e' or 'large-head' genre, which prioritises the subject's facial features and expression over the surrounding environment.
The composition is minimalist, placing the focus entirely on the subject. Hanaogi is shown in profile, her hair styled in the elaborate fashion typical of the period, adorned with numerous hairpins. The artist uses clean, precise lines to define the contours of her face and the folds of her kimono. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones to convey a sense of elegance and composure. The background is left largely unadorned, which directs the viewer's attention to the subtle details of the subject's expression and the texture of her attire.
Eishō's work captures the idealised beauty of the Yoshiwara courtesans, who were the celebrities of their time. These prints were often produced as promotional material or souvenirs for patrons of the pleasure quarters. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked alongside the artist to achieve such clarity in the line work and the delicate application of colour. The inclusion of the artist's signature and the title cartouche provides historical context, identifying both the creator and the specific subject of the portrait. This piece offers a clear example of the stylistic conventions of the late Edo period, where the focus shifted toward individualised portraiture within the broader framework of the floating world.
