The figure stands with a slight stoop, his weight supported by a long, slender staff. His posture suggests a weary but attentive presence, common in Hokusai's depictions of everyday Japanese life during the Edo period.
The artist uses a minimal palette, allowing the focus to remain on the economy of the brushwork. The man wears a simple kimono with a subtle grid pattern on the outer garment, which provides a visual contrast to the fluid, sweeping lines of his under-robe.
