A pair of traditional Japanese ink wash scrolls by Shūgetsu Tōkan, featuring atmospheric mountain scenes and figures in the Muromachi style.
This pair of hanging scrolls by Shūgetsu Tōkan represents the aesthetic traditions of Muromachi period ink painting. Shūgetsu, a monk-painter associated with the Sesshū school, utilised the suiboku-ga technique to create these atmospheric compositions. The work employs varying densities of ink to suggest depth, distance, and the ephemeral nature of the natural world.
The left scroll depicts a rugged cliffside path, where a solitary figure navigates the terrain. The right scroll presents a more tranquil scene, featuring a small structure nestled near a shoreline, framed by pine trees and distant, rounded mountains. The artist uses calligraphic brushwork to define the textures of the rocks and the needles of the pines, while the negative space of the unpainted paper suggests mist and expansive water.
These scrolls reflect the influence of Chinese Song and Yuan dynasty painting, which served as a primary model for Japanese ink painters of the era. The composition relies on the balance between detailed foreground elements and the void of the background. This approach encourages a contemplative viewing experience, typical of the Zen-influenced art of the time. The mounting, which includes decorative brocade borders, is consistent with the presentation of such works in a traditional Japanese interior. The scrolls demonstrate the technical control required to manage ink wash on absorbent paper, where each stroke is final and cannot be corrected. Shūgetsu Tōkan remains a significant figure in the history of Japanese ink painting, known for his ability to capture the essence of a scene through minimal means.
