This hanging scroll by the Japanese artist Seisetsu Shūcho demonstrates the mastery of ink wash techniques common in the Edo period. The composition focuses on the interplay between the luminous, circular form of the moon and the surrounding atmospheric clouds. By employing varying densities of ink, the artist creates a sense of depth and movement, where the clouds appear to drift across the celestial body.
