A traditional Chinese ink wash fan painting by Cheng Jiasui, featuring a chicken amongst bamboo and grasses.
This fan painting by Cheng Jiasui displays the characteristic restraint of the late Ming Dynasty literati tradition. The composition is executed in ink on paper, utilising the fan format to frame a quiet, observational scene. A single chicken stands amidst sparse vegetation, with bamboo stalks and overhanging foliage providing a sense of enclosure. The artist employs a calligraphic approach to the brushwork, where the variation in ink density defines the texture of the feathers and the structure of the plants.
Cheng Jiasui was a member of the Nine Friends of Painting, a group of artists who sought to preserve the traditions of earlier masters during a period of political transition. His work often avoids the decorative excess found in professional court painting, favouring instead a personal, expressive style. The negative space on the fan is used to suggest the atmosphere, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the subject and the natural elements. The inclusion of an inscription and a red seal on the left side provides historical context, identifying the work as a product of the artist's mature period.
The ink wash technique allows for subtle gradations of tone, which create a sense of depth despite the flat nature of the fan surface. The bamboo is rendered with quick, decisive strokes, while the chicken is depicted with softer, layered ink applications. This piece reflects the scholarly interest in nature as a subject for contemplation rather than mere representation. It is a fine example of how the literati painters used simple, everyday subjects to convey a sense of harmony and intellectual detachment from the complexities of the world.
