Tani Bunchō was a central figure in the Edo period art world, known for his ability to synthesise diverse styles, including Chinese literati painting, Northern and Southern schools, and Western techniques. This work demonstrates his mastery of ink wash, or suiboku-ga, where the artist uses varying concentrations of ink to suggest depth and atmosphere.

The composition features towering mountain forms that emerge from a dense, ethereal mist. Bunchō employs a soft, modulated application of ink to render the craggy peaks, allowing the silk support to remain visible in the lighter areas, which creates a sense of luminosity.
