Beschreibung
A traditional Japanese ink wash screen painting depicting horses within a mountainous architectural setting, rendered with delicate brushwork and atmospheric depth.
This work, known as Umaya-zu byobu, represents a traditional Japanese screen painting format. The composition is divided into two panels, each presenting a distinct yet connected view of a mountainous retreat. The ink wash technique, or suiboku-ga, relies on the modulation of ink density to create depth and atmosphere. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the varying tones of grey to define the craggy mountain peaks, the cascading waterfall, and the architectural forms of the stables.
The depiction of horses within these structures was a common subject in Japanese art during the early Edo period. These animals were often associated with status, military prowess, and the nobility. The architecture, rendered with precise lines, provides a geometric counterpoint to the organic, flowing forms of the surrounding trees and rock formations. The mist, suggested by the negative space and lighter washes, creates a sense of distance and quietude, typical of the period's aesthetic preferences.
Technically, the work demonstrates a high level of control over the brush. The calligraphic quality of the lines used for the pine branches and the structural beams of the buildings contrasts with the broader, softer applications of ink used for the mountains. The framing, with its patterned borders, serves to contain the expansive scene, drawing the viewer into the specific details of the stable interior and the surrounding natural environment. This piece reflects the cultural values of the time, where the integration of human activity and the natural world was a primary concern for artists and patrons alike. The work remains a fine example of the technical skill and thematic focus prevalent in Japanese screen painting of the seventeenth century.

Artist Biography
Unknown Artist
Anonymity in art often stems from the loss of historical records rather than a choice by the creator. In 19th-century Morocco, early photography was frequently practised by visiting practitioners or local studios whose names were not always recorded on the final prints. Works by an Unknown Artist in this collection include Moroccan studio portraits and Japanese woodblock prints depicting the Battle of Pyongyang. These pieces illustrate how anonymous artists documented global events and personal identities across different continents during the same era.
The artistic approach of the Unknown Artist varies between the formal composition of the carte-de-visite and the narrative style of the war prints. In the Moroccan portraits, the focus rests on the subject's posture and attire against a neutral studio backdrop. The Japanese prints use bold lines and flat colours to depict military movements and naval victories. Despite the lack of a specific attribution, these works demonstrate a high level of technical skill in both lithography and woodblock carving.
Modern collectors often value anonymous works for their mystery and focus on the image itself. These prints provide a direct connection to history without the distraction of a famous name. They function as windows into the 19th-century world, from the quiet dignity of a young girl in a studio to the chaos of a distant conflict. These pieces offer a sense of discovery for those who appreciate the aesthetic qualities of vintage photography and historical illustration.
