This work by Liu Du, an artist active during the mid-17th century, demonstrates the enduring influence of the Five Dynasties period master Juran. Liu Du adopts the characteristic 'hemp-fibre' texture strokes and rounded, monumental mountain forms associated with the Southern Tang tradition. The composition follows a vertical hanging scroll format, guiding the viewer from the detailed foreground of trees and rocky outcrops up towards the towering, mist-shrouded peaks that dominate the upper register.
Liu Du employs a subtle tonal range, using ink washes to suggest depth and atmospheric perspective. The interplay between the solid, rounded rock formations and the negative space of the river creates a sense of balance. Small architectural elements, such as a pavilion tucked into the hillside, provide a sense of scale and human presence within the vast natural environment.
