A traditional ink wash painting by Luo Mu, depicting a serene river scene with mountains and autumn trees.
Luo Mu, a painter active during the early Qing Dynasty, is associated with the Jiangxi school of painting. This work demonstrates the traditional literati approach to ink wash, focusing on the interplay between negative space and brushwork. The composition follows a horizontal format, typical of handscrolls, where the viewer moves through the scene from one side to the other.
The imagery features rounded mountain forms, clusters of trees, and a quiet river. The artist employs varying densities of ink to suggest depth and texture. The foreground contains bare, skeletal trees, which indicate the seasonal transition into autumn. Small structures are tucked into the lower left, providing a sense of human scale against the expansive natural environment. The mountains in the background are rendered with soft, layered washes, creating a sense of distance and atmospheric perspective.
Luo Mu was known for his adherence to the styles of the Yuan masters, particularly in his use of dry brushwork and controlled ink application. The work avoids excessive detail, preferring instead to capture the essence of the terrain through rhythmic strokes and tonal variation. The paper surface remains largely unpainted, allowing the negative space to represent water and sky. This technique creates a balanced visual experience, where the eye is guided across the paper by the placement of the landmasses and vegetation. The lack of colour emphasises the structural qualities of the ink, showcasing the artist's technical control over the medium.
