Gustav Klimt painted Lakeside with Birch Trees in 1901. This work originates from his summer stays at the Attersee in the Salzkammergut region of Austria. During these periods, Klimt moved away from his figurative allegories to focus on the natural environment. The composition is square, a format the artist favoured for his later works.

The painting depicts a quiet stretch of water bordered by a meadow. Two slender birch trees stand in the foreground, their white trunks providing a vertical contrast to the horizontal expanse of the lake. Klimt applies paint in small, mosaic-like dabs, a technique that flattens the pictorial space and emphasises the surface of the canvas. The water reflects the surrounding foliage, creating a muted, atmospheric effect.

Small wildflowers dot the grassy bank, rendered with short, rhythmic brushstrokes. The palette consists of soft greens, earthy browns, and pale blues. There is little sense of traditional perspective. Instead, the viewer is presented with a decorative arrangement of colour and texture. This approach reflects the influence of pointillism and the artist's interest in the flat, patterned surfaces found in Japanese woodblock prints.

Klimt produced several such studies of the Attersee, often using a cardboard viewfinder to isolate specific sections of the shoreline. By removing the horizon line, he creates an immersive experience that focuses on the immediate details of the flora and the water. This work demonstrates his ability to translate the natural world into a structured, almost textile-like composition, while maintaining a sense of quiet observation.
