A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting the busy ferry landing at Kuwana from the Hoeido Tokaido series.
This woodblock print is part of the Hoeido Tokaido series, which documents the route between Edo and Kyoto. Hiroshige depicts the Shichiri ferry landing at Kuwana, a station situated on the Ise Bay. The composition focuses on the arrival of sailing vessels at the stone-walled harbour. The artist employs a clear division between the foreground water, rendered with rhythmic, stylised waves, and the architectural elements of the castle town in the background.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Edo period publishing industry. The use of colour gradients in the sky, known as bokashi, provides a sense of atmospheric depth without relying on Western linear perspective. The stone walls of the Kuwana castle complex are rendered with simple, geometric shapes, contrasting with the organic movement of the water and the white sails of the boats. Hiroshige captures the daily activity of the ferry crossing, a necessary transit point for travellers on the Tokaido road.
As a master of the Ukiyo-e genre, Hiroshige utilised the medium to convey the specific character of Japanese locations. This print avoids unnecessary detail, choosing instead to focus on the essential forms of the boats and the coastal fortifications. The palette remains restrained, relying on blues for the water and soft tones for the sky, which allows the viewer to focus on the structural composition. The print remains a primary source for understanding the visual culture of nineteenth-century Japan, offering a glimpse into the travel habits and geography of the era.
