A preparatory drawing from the Pahari school depicting the mythological confrontation between Krishna and the demon Bakasura.
This work originates from the Guler-Kangra school of Pahari painting, specifically associated with the workshop of Manaku and his descendants. The composition depicts a narrative episode from the Bhagavata Purana, where the deity Krishna confronts the demon Bakasura, who has assumed the form of a giant crane. The artist employs a flattened perspective, typical of the period, to organise the mythological figures against a bold, monochromatic background.
The drawing demonstrates the technical precision required for preparatory studies in the Pahari tradition. Fine, controlled lines define the anatomy of the figures and the mythical creature, while the spatial arrangement prioritises narrative clarity over realistic depth. The use of colour is restrained, focusing on the symbolic representation of the characters rather than atmospheric effects. The figures are rendered with the characteristic facial profiles and elegant postures found in mid-eighteenth-century Guler works.
Such drawings served as the foundation for finished paintings, providing the compositional framework before the application of pigments. The attention to detail in the depiction of the crane demon and the divine form of Krishna reflects the devotional nature of the Bhagavata Purana. This piece offers a view into the working methods of a family of court artists in the Punjab Hills, where the transmission of stylistic conventions remained consistent across generations. The work is a study in the synthesis of narrative storytelling and traditional Indian aesthetic principles, maintaining a balance between the human and the divine through precise, rhythmic line work.
