A 18th-century Pahari miniature depicting Maharaja Sidh Sen of Mandi in a formal diplomatic assembly.
This work originates from the Mandi court in the Himalayan foothills, a region known for its distinct approach to Pahari painting. It depicts Maharaja Sidh Sen, a ruler of Mandi, engaged in a formal diplomatic meeting. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the elevated platform where the Maharaja sits in conversation with a dignitary, and the ground level occupied by attendants and horses.
The Maharaja is shown in a white jama, seated beneath a large, leafy tree that provides a canopy for the assembly. His posture is relaxed yet authoritative, with his hand resting upon his sword. Opposite him sits a figure in a green robe, suggesting a high-ranking visitor or official. The lower register features a group of courtiers and mounted attendants, their horses rendered with careful attention to their tack and posture.
The style is characteristic of the Mandi school during the early 18th century, which often favoured bold, somewhat simplified forms and a clear, readable narrative structure. The figures are painted with a focus on profile and three-quarter views, typical of the miniature tradition. The palette relies on earthy tones, punctuated by the white of the garments and the green of the foliage, all set against a muted background. The use of gold leaf adds a subtle quality to the ornamentation of the clothing and the Maharaja's accoutrements.
This painting serves as a record of courtly life and the diplomatic protocols of the period. The artist employs a flat perspective, common in Indian miniature painting, which allows for the clear identification of each participant in the scene. The attention to detail in the horses and the varied expressions of the attendants provides a sense of the activity surrounding the ruler. This piece offers a view into the visual culture of the Mandi court, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the time.
