A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro, capturing the actor Ichimura Kamezo I in a dramatic warrior role with traditional theatrical costume.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro depicts the kabuki actor Ichimura Kamezo I in a warrior role. The Torii school held a long association with the kabuki theatre, producing posters and portraits that captured the exaggerated expressions and dramatic stances of performers. This work belongs to the benizuri-e style, which utilised a limited palette of pink and green pigments alongside black ink to create a distinct visual effect.
The actor stands in a three-quarter profile, holding a folding fan. His kimono features a complex arrangement of patterns, including geometric shapes, stylised bamboo, and circular crests. The lines are bold and deliberate, characteristic of the Torii style, which prioritised the clarity of the actor's form and the specific details of his costume. The composition is balanced, with the figure occupying the majority of the vertical space, while calligraphy in the upper section provides context regarding the actor and the performance.
Kiyohiro was active during the mid-18th century, a period when ukiyo-e artists refined the techniques of colour printing. The print demonstrates the focus on theatricality that defined the Torii school's output. The figure's posture suggests a moment of tension or resolve, typical of the heroic characters portrayed on the kabuki stage. The use of negative space around the figure allows the viewer to focus on the graphic quality of the robes and the stylised facial features. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic conventions of the Edo period, where the worlds of popular theatre and printmaking intersected to document the celebrities of the day.
