A serene coastal scene by Maximilien Luce, depicting a path through a golden field in Kermouster, Brittany, under a sky filled with soft, light-catching clouds.
Maximilien Luce, a prominent figure in the Neo-Impressionist movement, frequently turned his attention to the coastal regions of Brittany during his later career. This work, Kermouster, The Way, captures a quiet moment along the shoreline of the Trieux estuary. The composition is anchored by a path leading towards the water, flanked by a field of golden grain on the left and a cluster of tall trees on the right. Two figures, a woman and a child, walk along the path, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the expansive coastal environment.
Luce employs a technique that reflects his earlier engagement with pointillism, though here the brushwork is more fluid and painterly. The sky is dominated by large, billowing clouds that catch the light, creating a sense of atmospheric movement. The colour palette is balanced, utilising the contrast between the warm, golden tones of the field and the cool, deep blues of the water. The distant shoreline is rendered with softer, muted hues, suggesting the hazy quality of a coastal day.
Unlike his earlier, more rigid experiments with colour theory, this period of Luce's work shows a greater focus on the natural light and the specific character of the Breton coast. The painting avoids excessive detail, instead relying on the interplay of light and shadow to define the forms of the trees and the undulating terrain. It is a characteristic example of his later output, where the artist sought to capture the atmosphere of a specific location through a refined, personal application of colour and light. The work remains a clear representation of his interest in the rural life and geography of Northern France.
