Willard Metcalf, a central figure in the development of American Impressionism, produced this work during his formative years in France. The painting captures the rugged terrain of the Brittany coastline, a region that attracted many artists during the late nineteenth century due to its distinct light and unrefined character. Metcalf employs a technique characterised by broken brushstrokes and a focus on the atmospheric qualities of the scene.

The composition is anchored by a large, windswept tree in the foreground, its branches reaching across the frame.
