Beschreibung
A classic woodblock print from Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, featuring the Kanasugi Bridge and the Shibaura coast at twilight.
Kanasugi Bridge and Shibaura is the 80th print from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige between 1856 and 1858. This specific work captures a scene near the Kanasugi Bridge, looking out towards the Shibaura coast. The composition is defined by the prominent display of banners and parasols, which were associated with the Nichiren Buddhist sect. These objects occupy the foreground, creating a vertical rhythm that contrasts with the horizontal expanse of the bay in the distance.
The print demonstrates Hiroshige's mastery of atmospheric perspective. The sky transitions from a soft, pale blue at the zenith to a warm, salmon-pink glow near the horizon, suggesting the time of day is either dawn or dusk. Below, the water is rendered in deep indigo, dotted with small boats that provide a sense of scale. The use of bold, graphic elements in the foreground, such as the large red banner and the array of smaller white flags, draws the viewer into the scene while maintaining a clear separation between the immediate objects and the distant coastal view.
Technically, the work exhibits the precise woodblock carving and colour application characteristic of the late Edo period. The registration of the blocks allows for clean lines and distinct colour fields. The inclusion of the Nichiren banners adds a layer of cultural specificity, linking the location to local religious practices of the time. As part of the larger series, this print contributes to the comprehensive documentation of Edo, capturing both the natural environment and the human activity that defined the city. The balance between the static, decorative foreground and the fluid, receding background is a hallmark of Hiroshige's approach to landscape composition.
