John Everett Millais painted Jephthah in 1867, a period when his style moved away from the strict detail of his early Pre-Raphaelite years toward a broader, more academic manner. The work depicts a scene from the Book of Judges, where the Israelite leader Jephthah returns home after a victory, only to realise his vow requires him to sacrifice his daughter.

Millais focuses on the emotional weight of the moment. Jephthah sits in a state of collapse, his head buried in his hands, while his daughter rests beside him in a white gown. Her expression is one of resignation rather than terror. The composition is crowded with figures, including attendants and musicians, who provide a sense of scale and narrative context. The artist employs a muted palette, dominated by earth tones, deep greens, and the pale fabric of the daughter's dress, which draws the eye to the centre of the scene.

Technically, the work demonstrates the artist's skill in rendering textures, from the rough fur of Jephthah's cloak to the metallic sheen of the shield resting on the floor. The lighting is theatrical, suggesting an interior space shielded from the bright light visible through the opening at the back. By this stage in his career, Millais was producing large-scale narrative works intended for the Royal Academy, and Jephthah reflects his interest in dramatic human stories. The painting is part of the collection at the National Museum Cardiff. It remains a clear example of Victorian history painting, where the artist balances archaeological detail with the psychological state of the subjects.
