A striking woodblock print by Enjaku depicting the kabuki actor Ichikawa Yonezō as the vengeful ghost Oiwa, complete with traditional supernatural motifs.
This woodblock print by the Osaka-based artist Enjaku depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Yonezō in the role of Oiwa, the vengeful spirit from the classic ghost story Yotsuya Kaidan. The composition focuses on the spectral figure, rendered with a pale, ethereal complexion against a dark, atmospheric background. The artist employs a stark contrast between the ghostly white robes and the deep, ink-toned void, which serves to isolate the figure in a state of supernatural suspension.
Oiwa is shown with her characteristic disfigured features, a result of the poison that drives the narrative of the play. Her posture is stiff and unnatural, with one arm extended in a gesture typical of kabuki performance. A small, flickering flame appears in the upper right, a traditional Japanese motif used to signify the presence of a yūrei, or ghost. The print captures the theatricality of the Meiji-era stage, where actors were often depicted in their most dramatic roles to satisfy the public appetite for supernatural tales.
Enjaku was a practitioner of the Kamigata-e style, which differed from the Edo school in its focus on the specific nuances of actors performing in the Osaka and Kyoto theatres. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, particularly in the subtle gradations of the background and the clean, deliberate lines defining the actor's robes. The inclusion of calligraphic text and the actor's name in red cartouches provides context for the performance, identifying both the character and the individual portraying her. This work offers a glimpse into the intersection of folklore, theatre, and visual art in late nineteenth-century Japan, presenting a moment of high drama frozen in time.
