A triptych ink painting by Kyūseki Tomonobu featuring Hotei and Daoist immortals, rendered with fluid brushwork on silk.
This triptych by Kyūseki Tomonobu presents a series of figures rooted in East Asian folklore and religious tradition. The central panel features Hotei, the jovial deity often associated with contentment and abundance, depicted with his characteristic sack and surrounded by children. His expression is one of mirth, a common motif in Zen-influenced art of the Edo period. The flanking panels depict Daoist immortals, figures who have transcended the mundane world to achieve spiritual liberation. One figure is shown interacting with a dragon, while the other rides a large carp, a creature symbolising perseverance and success in East Asian iconography.
Tomonobu employs a restrained palette, relying on the subtle variations of ink wash to define form and space. The silk support provides a soft, muted background that allows the brushwork to remain the primary focus. The lines are fluid and expressive, capturing the movement of robes and the distinct personalities of the subjects. This work reflects the cultural synthesis of the era, where Buddhist and Daoist themes were frequently explored through the medium of ink painting. The composition is balanced, with each panel functioning as an independent unit while maintaining a thematic connection to the others. The artist demonstrates a command of traditional brush techniques, using varying pressure to create depth and texture within the figures. This piece offers a window into the spiritual and narrative interests of the period, presenting these legendary figures not as distant icons, but as approachable characters within a shared mythological framework.
