A traditional ink wash hanging scroll by Kanô Tsunenobu, depicting the Daoist immortal Fei Jiang-fang and his crane within a serene, atmospheric mountain setting.
This hanging scroll depicts the legendary Daoist immortal Fei Jiang-fang, accompanied by his crane. Kanô Tsunenobu, a prominent member of the Kanô school during the Edo period, employs the traditional ink wash technique to create a scene of atmospheric depth. The composition balances the solid forms of the rocky terrain and the architectural elements with the expansive, misty void of the water and distant mountains.
The brushwork demonstrates the disciplined training characteristic of the Kanô lineage. Tsunenobu uses varying ink tones to define the textures of the gnarled pine tree and the craggy cliffs, while the crane remains a subtle presence within the broader narrative. The use of negative space, or ma, allows the viewer to perceive the vastness of the setting, a common feature in East Asian ink painting. The scroll format itself dictates the vertical orientation, guiding the eye from the foreground details upward toward the distant peaks.
As a practitioner of the Kanô style, Tsunenobu maintained the balance between decorative appeal and scholarly restraint. The work reflects the cultural values of the period, where themes from Chinese mythology were frequently adapted into the Japanese aesthetic. The muted palette, dominated by shades of grey and sepia with sparing applications of colour, ensures that the focus remains on the calligraphic quality of the brushstrokes and the overall harmony of the scene. This print captures the nuances of the original silk surface, preserving the delicate transitions between ink washes and the subtle paper tones that define the work.
