A refined surimono woodblock print by Kita Busei, depicting the deity Hotei with a sack of children, accompanied by traditional Japanese calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Kita Busei depicts Hotei, one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese folklore, known for his large sack and jovial nature. In this composition, Hotei is shown opening his expansive bag, from which several small boys emerge. The scene is characteristic of surimono, a genre of privately commissioned prints often distributed among poetry circles. These works frequently combined sophisticated imagery with kyoka, a form of humorous or satirical waka poetry, which is visible here in the elegant calligraphy surrounding the figures.
Kita Busei, a student of the artist Kita Shigemasa, was active during the early nineteenth century. His work often reflects the refined aesthetic preferences of the Edo period literati. The print displays a delicate balance between the central narrative and the surrounding text. The boys, rendered with expressive gestures, appear to spill out from the patterned fabric of the sack, which is decorated with subtle geometric motifs. The artist employs a restrained colour palette, allowing the fine line work to define the forms of the figures and the folds of the cloth.
Surimono prints were produced using high-quality paper and often featured special printing techniques, such as metallic pigments or embossing, to appeal to a discerning audience. This particular example captures the playful spirit associated with Hotei, who is traditionally viewed as a patron of children and a bringer of prosperity. The composition is open and airy, typical of the surimono format, which prioritises a harmonious integration of image and verse. The print provides a window into the cultural life of Edo, where art and literature were closely intertwined in the social practices of the urban elite.
