A haunting Symbolist interpretation of the classical myth, featuring Hercules facing the multi-headed Hydra in a dreamlike, atmospheric setting.
Gustave Moreau, a central figure in the French Symbolist movement, produced this work in 1876. It depicts the second labour of Hercules, where the hero confronts the multi-headed serpent in the marshes of Lerna. Unlike the traditional heroic depictions of this myth, Moreau presents a scene of quiet, almost static tension. Hercules stands to the left, his posture composed and detached, while the Hydra rises from the swampy ground like a totem or a strange, organic monument. The surrounding environment is rendered with a dreamlike quality, where the rocky cliffs and murky waters blur into a hazy, atmospheric distance.
Moreau was known for his fascination with the exotic and the arcane, often filling his canvases with dense, jewel-like textures and a sense of claustrophobic mystery. The surface of the painting is worked with a meticulous attention to detail, particularly in the scales of the serpent and the scattered remains of previous victims at its base. The lighting is unconventional, casting a strange glow that seems to emanate from the figures themselves rather than a natural source. This approach moves away from the realism favoured by his contemporaries, opting instead for a subjective, internalised vision of the classical world. The composition is balanced by the verticality of the Hydra and the upright stance of the hero, creating a sense of equilibrium between the two adversaries. This print captures the specific tonal qualities of Moreau's original, preserving the murky browns, deep ochres, and flashes of crimson that define his unique approach to colour and form.
