A detail from the Maestà altarpiece by Duccio, depicting the biblical miracle of Christ healing a blind man with characteristic Sienese precision.
This panel is a component of the Maestà, the monumental altarpiece commissioned for the Siena Cathedral. Duccio di Buoninsegna, a central figure in the Sienese School, executed this work between 1308 and 1311. The scene depicts the biblical narrative of Christ restoring sight to a blind man.
Duccio employs a clear, narrative structure typical of his approach to religious iconography. Christ stands at the centre, his hand extended to touch the eyes of the man before him. The figures are arranged with a sense of spatial order, reflecting the transition from Byzantine traditions toward a more humanised representation of sacred events. The palette is defined by the use of lapis lazuli blue and vermilion, colours that provide a clear distinction between the figures and the architectural setting.
The man born blind is shown with a staff, his posture one of receptivity. Behind Christ, a group of disciples observes the miracle. Their expressions are individualised, showing a range of reactions to the event. The architectural background is simplified, serving to frame the interaction rather than provide a realistic environment. This focus on the psychological and physical connection between the figures is a hallmark of Duccio's style.
As a fragment of the larger Maestà, this work demonstrates the technical precision required for tempera painting on wood. The application of gold leaf, though partially worn, would have originally provided a luminous quality to the scene. This print captures the clarity of Duccio's line work and the balanced composition that defined Sienese painting in the early fourteenth century. It offers a view into the development of narrative art in Italy, where the focus shifted toward the emotional resonance of the figures involved in the story.
