A detailed Renaissance engraving depicting the dramatic biblical moment of Saint Paul's conversion, featuring precise line work and celestial imagery.
This engraving depicts the biblical narrative of the conversion of Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus. The composition is organised with a clear vertical hierarchy, moving from the earthly chaos of the fallen soldier in the foreground to the divine intervention emanating from the heavens above.
In the lower register, the artist captures the immediate aftermath of the blinding light. Saul lies prostrate on the ground, his armour rendered with precise, linear detail, while his companions react with confusion and alarm. The horses are depicted in various states of agitation, adding a sense of kinetic energy to the scene. The background features a walled city and rocky outcrops, which provide a sense of place while maintaining the flattened, decorative quality typical of early Italian printmaking.
Above the figures, the heavens open to reveal a divine presence surrounded by cherubim. A stream of light descends directly toward the fallen Saul, acting as the visual bridge between the human and the celestial. The use of hatching and cross-hatching creates texture and volume within the figures and the landscape, demonstrating the technical capabilities of the medium during the late fifteenth century.
Matteo di Giovanni, a Sienese painter, is known for his expressive figures and dramatic compositions. This print reflects the stylistic conventions of the period, where narrative clarity and symbolic representation take precedence over atmospheric perspective. The arched top suggests the work may have been intended as a devotional image or a design for a larger decorative project. The print offers a view into the visual language of the Italian Renaissance, where theological themes were communicated through structured, detailed iconography.
