Victor Borisov-Musatov was a central figure in Russian Symbolism, known for his dreamlike, atmospheric approach to the natural world. Hazel Bush, completed in 1905, demonstrates his characteristic method of layering colour to create a sense of ethereal distance. The composition is structured around the verticality of the foreground tree, which acts as a frame for the softer, more diffused foliage beyond.
Borisov-Musatov often utilised tempera to achieve a matte, chalky finish that muted the intensity of his palette. This technique allowed him to soften the edges of his subjects, blurring the distinction between the physical form of the hazel bush and the surrounding air.
