Beschreibung
A striking lithograph by Gino Severini, featuring two harlequin musicians rendered in a bold, geometric Cubist style.
Gino Severini, a central figure in the Italian Futurist movement, frequently returned to the subject of the commedia dell'arte throughout his career. This lithograph depicts two harlequin figures, a recurring motif that allowed the artist to explore geometric abstraction while maintaining a connection to theatrical tradition. The composition is structured through a series of interlocking planes, which break down the figures into angular, rhythmic forms.
Severini employs a controlled palette of blue, pink, brown, and black to define the spatial relationships between the musicians and their instruments. The accordion held by the figure on the left serves as a central anchor, its bellows rendered as a sequence of sharp, repeating triangles. The right-hand figure, holding a guitar, mirrors this geometric rigour, with the diamond-patterned costume providing a visual counterpoint to the broader blocks of colour.
Unlike his earlier, more kinetic Futurist works that sought to capture the speed and noise of modern life, this piece reflects a shift toward a more synthetic approach. The influence of Synthetic Cubism is evident in the flattened perspective and the deliberate arrangement of shapes, which prioritise decorative balance over naturalistic representation. The lines are bold and decisive, creating a clear separation between the figures and the dark, ambiguous background.
This work demonstrates Severini's ability to synthesise classical subject matter with the formal innovations of the early twentieth century. By reducing the human form to its essential geometric components, he creates a sense of movement and musicality without relying on traditional modelling. The print captures the artist's mature style, where the focus lies on the interplay of colour, shape, and rhythm within a confined, two-dimensional space.
