This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Hamamuraya Roko. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a brief but intense period of activity for the artist, who created approximately 140 prints within a ten-month span. Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised portraits common in the ukiyo-e genre of the late eighteenth century. Instead, he employed a style of caricature that exaggerated the facial features of his subjects, capturing the specific expressions and psychological intensity of the actors on stage.
The composition focuses on the head and shoulders of the actor, set against a plain, mica-dusted background. This choice of background serves to isolate the figure, directing the viewer's attention to the actor's posture and the lines of his face. The use of bold, black ink for the hair and the collar contrasts with the muted green of the kimono and the pale skin tone. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Edo-period woodblock process, where multiple carved blocks were used to apply distinct colours and outlines to the paper.
Sharaku's approach to portraiture remains a subject of study for historians of Japanese art.
