A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu I, featuring a kabuki actor in a graceful pose, defined by bold, calligraphic lines.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu I captures a performer in the role of a bijin, or beautiful woman. The Torii school, founded by Torii Kiyonobu I, held a dominant position in the production of theatrical imagery during the Genroku period. Their work focused on the kabuki theatre, often depicting actors in exaggerated poses that conveyed the energy of the stage.
The composition relies on the bold, calligraphic line work characteristic of the early Ukiyo-e period. The artist employs a technique known as tan-e, where the print is defined by strong black outlines. The figure is shown in a graceful, slightly curved posture, with the kimono sleeves and hem providing a canvas for the repeating tomoe crests and shell motifs. The artist uses the negative space of the paper to maintain a sense of balance, allowing the viewer to focus on the fluid movement of the fabric and the delicate gesture of the hand holding a comb.
Kiyomasu I was known for his ability to capture the essence of the actor beneath the costume. While the face remains stylised, the posture suggests a specific theatrical character. The print reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the theatre and the pleasure districts provided the primary subject matter for artists. By stripping away colour, the print emphasises the strength of the draughtsmanship and the rhythmic quality of the lines. This piece is a representative example of the early development of the Ukiyo-e genre, showing how the Torii school established a visual language that would define Japanese printmaking for decades. The simplicity of the presentation allows the viewer to appreciate the precision of the carving and the intentionality behind every stroke.
