This woodblock print is part of the Reisho Tokaido series, a later iteration of Utagawa Hiroshige's famous documentation of the route between Edo and Kyoto. The Reisho Tokaido is distinguished by the use of clerical script (reisho) in the cartouches, which sets it apart from the artist's earlier, more widely known series of the same subject.

In this composition, Hiroshige depicts the area near Goyu, the thirty-sixth station on the Tokaido road. The scene features a quiet, rural stretch of the Motono Plain. In the foreground, three figures walk along a path, framed by the drooping branches of willow trees. The middle ground is occupied by a calm body of water, while the background reveals a range of rolling hills and the distant, snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft greens, muted blues, and earthy tones to convey the atmosphere of a peaceful journey.

Hiroshige was a master of the atmospheric print, often using weather and seasonal changes to define the mood of a location. Here, the clear sky and calm water suggest a temperate day. The composition balances the verticality of the central willow tree with the horizontal lines of the distant mountains and the water's edge. The print captures the essence of travel in the Edo period, where the journey was as much about the observation of local geography as it was about reaching a destination.
