This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the station of Fujisawa, a location on the Tokaido road connecting Edo and Kyoto. The composition captures travellers navigating the coastal path, accompanied by pack animals. In the distance, the silhouette of Mount Fuji rises above the horizon, a recurring motif in Hokusai's oeuvre. The artist employs a clear, graphic style, utilising distinct outlines and a restrained colour palette to define the figures and the surrounding geography.
Unlike the later, more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige, Hokusai's interpretation of the Tokaido stations often focuses on the human element and the daily activities of those traversing the route. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Edo-period woodblock printing process, where separate blocks were carved for each colour.
