A classic Fauvist still life by Henri Matisse, featuring goldfish in a bowl surrounded by lush garden foliage.
Painted in 1912, this work is part of a series of paintings by Henri Matisse featuring goldfish. The artist observed these fish in a glass bowl while visiting Tangier, Morocco. He was struck by the calm, meditative quality of the fish as they swam in the water. This painting captures that stillness through a bold, non-naturalistic use of colour and flattened perspective.
The composition is organised around the circular form of the fish bowl, which sits upon a small, round table. Matisse employs a high-angle view, which allows the viewer to see both the fish within the bowl and the surrounding garden environment. The background is filled with green foliage and pink flowers, rendered in a simplified, decorative manner. The orange of the goldfish provides a sharp, contrasting note against the surrounding greens and pinks.
Matisse uses thin, fluid brushwork to define the forms, prioritising the arrangement of colour and shape over traditional modelling or depth. The table and the bowl are depicted with minimal shading, creating a sense of flatness that aligns with the artist's interest in decorative surfaces. The blue-green chair visible on the left side of the frame adds another layer of colour, balancing the composition. This work reflects the artist's interest in the interplay between interior and exterior spaces, a theme he explored throughout his career. The focus remains on the sensory experience of the scene, using simplified forms to convey a sense of peace and domestic harmony. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow.
