A refined typographic design by Antoon Derkinderen, featuring the Latin phrase Gloria in excelsis Deo rendered with ornamental floral motifs.
Antoon Derkinderen was a Dutch artist known for his contributions to the decorative arts and his interest in the synthesis of text and image. This work, titled Gloria in excelsis Deo, reflects the period's fascination with medieval manuscript illumination and the revival of traditional craftsmanship. The design features a horizontal composition where the Latin phrase is integrated into a structured, ornamental frame.
The lettering exhibits a clear influence from historical calligraphy, adapted to fit the aesthetic requirements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The characters are enclosed within rectangular panels, with the larger letters G, D, and O containing floral motifs that break the rigidity of the letterforms. The colour palette is restrained, relying on shades of ochre, soft orange, and muted brown to create a harmonious visual effect. The surrounding border consists of a repeating geometric pattern, providing a sense of order and balance to the overall design.
This piece demonstrates the artist's focus on the graphic quality of text as a decorative element. Rather than treating the words as mere communication, Derkinderen treats them as architectural components of the page. The work is characteristic of the period's broader interest in book design and the elevation of graphic arts to a fine art status. The precision of the line work and the deliberate placement of each element suggest a preparatory study or a finished design intended for a liturgical publication or a decorative panel. It remains a clear example of the Dutch Art Nouveau movement's engagement with historical styles, reinterpreted through a modern graphic lens.
