A atmospheric Shin-hanga woodblock print by Tsuchiya Koitsu, capturing the Futarasan Shrine at Nikko during a heavy rainstorm.
Tsuchiya Koitsu was a prominent figure in the Shin-hanga movement, which sought to revitalise traditional Japanese woodblock printing by incorporating Western techniques of light, shadow, and atmospheric perspective. This print depicts the Futarasan Shrine at Nikko during a heavy downpour. The composition is dominated by the dark, vertical silhouette of the torii gate, which stands in contrast to the soft, blurred forms of the shrine buildings in the background.
Koitsu employs a sophisticated layering of ink to convey the density of the rain. Vertical lines of varying thickness and opacity create a sense of movement across the paper, obscuring the distant mountains and softening the edges of the architecture. The colour palette is restricted to cool greys, deep blues, and muted greens, which effectively communicate the damp, quiet atmosphere of the site. The stone path leading towards the gate is rendered with subtle tonal shifts, suggesting the reflective quality of wet ground.
Unlike the flat, graphic style of traditional Ukiyo-e, this work demonstrates a focus on naturalistic light effects. The artist captures the specific mood of a rainy day in a historic location, balancing the structural rigidity of the shrine with the fluid, ephemeral nature of the weather. The print reflects the Shin-hanga interest in travel and the documentation of iconic Japanese sites, presenting them through a lens of personal observation and technical precision. The attention to the texture of the rain and the interplay of light on the wet surfaces demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship involved in the collaboration between the artist, the carver, and the printer.
