A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting the fortifications of Tholen along the Schelde, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age.
This etching by Johannes Pietersz. Berendrecht captures a specific military fortification situated along the Schelde. The work belongs to the tradition of Dutch topographical printmaking, which documented the geography and defensive structures of the Low Countries during the seventeenth century. The composition focuses on the heavy masonry of the fort, rendered with precise, economical lines that define the texture of the stone and the surrounding earthworks.
In the foreground, the artist depicts the water with subtle horizontal hatching, creating a sense of calm movement. A small boat carrying figures provides a sense of scale against the imposing architecture of the fort. The inclusion of a lone sentry on the ramparts and the cannon positioned atop the bastion suggests the strategic nature of the location. The sky remains largely unworked, a common stylistic choice in period etchings to maintain focus on the architectural and maritime elements of the scene.
Berendrecht, active in the mid-seventeenth century, demonstrates a clear command of the etching needle. The lines are crisp and deliberate, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation to provide a clear record of the site. The print reflects the broader interest in the Dutch Republic regarding its own borders and the infrastructure required to protect them. The work is marked with a plate number, indicating it was likely part of a larger series documenting regional fortifications or coastal defences. This print offers a window into the historical topography of Tholen, preserving the appearance of a site that has since undergone significant changes. The technical execution is typical of the period, relying on varying line density to suggest shadow and depth without the use of complex tonal washes.
