The work is attributed to Esaias van de Velde, a Dutch artist known for his contributions to the development of realistic topographical representation during the early 17th century. The composition focuses on the defensive structures, featuring a prominent bastion and gatehouse that dominate the left foreground. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the masonry of the walls and the texture of the water.
In the foreground, small figures are positioned near the water, providing a sense of scale to the massive fortifications. A small boat carrying passengers occupies the lower right, while a sailing vessel is visible further out on the water. The background remains relatively sparse, with low-lying land and distant buildings rendered with minimal detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the military architecture. The sky is indicated by light, horizontal hatching, which maintains the clarity of the scene without distracting from the primary subject.
Van de Velde was instrumental in moving away from the highly stylised, imaginary views common in earlier printmaking. His approach favoured direct observation and a more naturalistic rendering of the Dutch environment. This print captures the functional appearance of a 17th-century fortification, documenting the defensive measures necessary for a town located on a major waterway. The work is part of a series documenting various locations, reflecting the period interest in geography and the documentation of the Dutch Republic.
