A woodblock print from the Yokohama-e genre, depicting Westerners in a domestic setting during the late Edo period.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of ukiyo-e produced during the late Edo period. These works documented the arrival of Westerners in the port city of Yokohama following the opening of Japan to international trade. Yoshikazu, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, captures a domestic scene involving foreign subjects, a common theme for artists attempting to interpret the appearance and habits of these new visitors.
The composition is divided into two distinct spaces. On the left, a bearded man reclines on a sofa, reading a book by the light of a lamp. On the right, a woman stands before a mirror, observing her reflection. The artist employs a flattened perspective, typical of the period, while incorporating Western elements such as the furniture, the clock, and the attire of the figures. The colour palette remains relatively muted, relying on traditional woodblock printing techniques to define the forms and textures of the clothing and interior surfaces.
Such prints functioned as visual news for the Japanese public, who were curious about the customs of people from abroad. The depiction of the man reading and the woman at her mirror suggests an attempt to humanise these foreigners by placing them in familiar, quiet domestic settings. The print provides a historical record of how Japanese artists perceived Western life during the early stages of the Meiji Restoration. The lines are clean and precise, characteristic of the Utagawa school, and the overall arrangement reflects the decorative sensibilities of the time.
