This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitomi, dating to 1861, belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e. These prints emerged during the late Edo period as Japan began to open its ports to foreign trade. Artists in the Utagawa school documented the arrival of Westerners, capturing their unfamiliar attire, customs, and technology for a curious Japanese public.
The composition depicts an American man on horseback, accompanied by a Japanese attendant. The American figure wears a tall hat and a dark military-style coat, smoking a cigar, which was a common visual trope used by Japanese artists to signify foreign identity. The horse is rendered with a stylised, almost decorative quality, typical of the period's approach to non-native subjects. The Japanese attendant, positioned partially behind the horse, displays a visible tattoo on his arm, providing a contrast between the traditional local culture and the newly arrived Western presence.
Technically, the print utilises the traditional woodblock process, with clear outlines and flat areas of colour. The palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones for the horse and the background, punctuated by the deep blue of the attendant's clothing and the red of the saddle cloth. The text integrated into the print serves as a caption, identifying the subject as an American. This work offers a glimpse into the cultural exchange and the fascination with the 'other' that defined the early years of the Meiji Restoration era. It functions as a historical record of how Westerners were perceived and categorised by Japanese society during this period of rapid transition.
