A classic Momoyama period folding screen painting by Kano Mitsunobu, featuring seasonal flowers arranged against a luminous gold leaf background.
This work is a representative example of the Momoyama period, a time when the Kano school produced large-scale screen paintings for the residences of the military elite. Kano Mitsunobu, the son of the celebrated Kano Eitoku, developed a style that moved away from the heavy, dense compositions of his father toward a more rhythmic and open arrangement of motifs.
Against a ground of gold leaf, the artist depicts a variety of seasonal flora. The composition is structured by patches of green earth, which provide a base for the delicate stems of chrysanthemums, bellflowers, and pinks. The gold leaf reflects light, creating a sense of space that is both flat and atmospheric. The plants are rendered with controlled brushwork, balancing the decorative nature of the gold background with the naturalistic observation of the botanical subjects. The inclusion of stylised cloud forms at the upper edges frames the scene, a common device in Japanese screen painting to suggest distance and transition.
This piece demonstrates the shift in aesthetic priorities during the late sixteenth century, where the focus turned to clarity and elegance. The arrangement of the flowers across the six panels allows for a narrative progression, guiding the eye from one cluster to the next. The use of mineral pigments for the leaves and petals provides a subtle contrast to the metallic surface, ensuring the botanical details remain legible. As a museum-grade print, this reproduction captures the texture of the original paper and the reflective quality of the gold leaf, offering a clear view of the brushwork and the deliberate spacing of the composition.
